With great sadness, the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center announces the death of Charlie Chin Song Chen, DO.
Just a few weeks ago, Charlie Chin Song Chen, DO, was busy seeing patients at the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center and greeting members of the Addabbo family with his friendly smile each day as he arrived early for work. Dr. Chen served the Rockaway community and endeared himself to his many patients for more than 21 years as a Family Practitioner.
Dr. Chen received his medical education at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, MO and was Board Certified in Family Medicine. During his 13 years with Addabbo, he earned the respect of his colleagues and was a sought-after and trusted physician with a tremendous patient following. He spoke four languages: English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
During a recent interview, Dr. Chen commented “it has been my honor and pleasure to have served the Rockaway community for more than two decades. I have taken care of many families in Rockaway over the years and have enjoyed watching them grow. Many of the patients I took care of as youngsters now have children of their own. That is an honor in itself.”
“Dr. Chen’s deep commitment to and love of his patients came through unequivocally. He was a gentle soul who provided comfort and care to the community for many years,” said Miriam Y. Vega, PhD, CEO of Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center. “He will be sorely missed by his friends, colleagues and patients.”
After a valiant fight, Dr. Chen succumbed to complications from COVID-19 today. The health center has lost a very trusted colleague. It was an honor to have worked with him.
The immediate outpouring of sentiment is a testament to how highly Dr. Chen was regarded by his peers and staff and how much he was loved. He embodied the spirit of caring for others – may that same spirit be carried forward in all of us.
