5 Silent Health Risks Your Annual Physical Can Detect Early

When you feel healthy, scheduling a doctor's visit might be the last thing on your mind. However, many serious health conditions develop quietly without a single warning sign.

At The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center, our team of 40 dedicated healthcare providers, including primary care physicians like Sergelyne Cadet-Valeus, MD, is here to help you stay ahead of these hidden concerns. With locations in Arverne, Far Rockaway, Jamaica, and Brooklyn, New York, we make it easy to prioritize your wellness.

During your routine annual physical, we perform targeted screenings to catch asymptomatic issues early. Through our Adult & Family Medicine service, we focus on prevention to keep you thriving. Here are five silent health risks your annual physical can detect early

Silent health risks an annual physical can detect

An annual physical can detect several silent health risks, including high blood pressure, prediabetes, and chronic kidney disease, before they cause noticeable symptoms. By identifying these issues early, we can implement lifestyle and medical interventions to protect your long-term wellness.

1. Stage 1 hypertension (high blood pressure)

This condition occurs when your systolic pressure is 130–139 mm Hg or your diastolic pressure is 80–89 mm Hg. Based on the American Heart Association (AHA), we use the PREVENT™ calculator to evaluate your 10-year cardiovascular risk.

If your risk is 7.5% or higher, early treatment can protect your heart. Clinical data show that even a small 5 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure lowers your risk of major cardiovascular events by about 10%. If you need specialized heart care, our cardiology team is ready to help.

2. Early-onset prediabetes

This metabolic condition is characterized by elevated blood sugar levels that we can identify early using simple blood tests.

To combat rising metabolic issues in younger adults, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) lowered the recommended screening age from 45 to 35 for adults who are overweight or obese. The USPSTF reports that high-intensity lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of progressing to Type 2 diabetes by 22%.

At our clinics, we offer personalized nutrition counseling to help you restore your body's insulin sensitivity.

3. Chronic kidney disease (CKD)

CKD is a progressive condition that damages your kidneys' filtering units, which we can detect early through routine blood and urine tests.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CKD affects about 14% of US adults, yet 90% of those affected do not know they have it. During your physical, our lab services can check your kidney function. If we catch CKD early, modern treatments like SGLT2 inhibitors can reduce the risk of kidney failure by 32%, helping you avoid dialysis.

How an annual physical can protect your long-term health

An annual physical supports your long-term health with a personalized screening plan designed to catch potential problems early while avoiding unnecessary testing and treatment. This ensures you receive only the tests and treatments that offer a clear clinical benefit for your unique body.

4. Elevated cardiovascular risk (ASCVD)

Elevated atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk is a silent buildup of plaque in your arteries that we detect using a standard lipid panel.

High cholesterol has no symptoms but slowly narrows your blood vessels. By checking your lipid levels, we can calculate your overall risk. For adults aged 40 to 75 with cardiovascular risk factors, starting a statin can reduce the risk of a heart attack by 36%.

Our primary care team will work with you to create a customized prevention plan.

5. Thyroid dysfunction (and navigating overdiagnosis)

Thyroid dysfunction involves an underactive or overactive thyroid gland, which we evaluate based on your specific symptoms and risk factors rather than routine, untargeted screening. Medical guidelines advise against routine thyroid screening for completely asymptomatic adults.

Thyroid nodules are common, and highly sensitive ultrasound can detect many nodules that would otherwise go unnoticed. A review of more than 95,000 adults found that ultrasound detected incidental thyroid nodules in approximately 30.6% of asymptomatic adults. Most identified nodules were smaller than 1 centimeter.

Because many small thyroid nodules are unlikely to cause harm, unnecessary ultrasound screening can sometimes lead to additional testing, biopsies, anxiety, and treatment that may not be needed.

That’s why we take a personalized approach, screening your thyroid only if you show specific signs like unexplained weight changes or fatigue.

Your annual physical is your most powerful tool for long-term wellness. It’s not about running endless, unnecessary tests, but about performing the right, targeted screenings for your unique body.

Whether you need primary care, podiatry care, or behavioral health support, our integrated team is here to guide you.
