Pregnancy Test Q & A

What is a pregnancy test?

A pregnancy test is often a urine test that determines whether or not you’re pregnant. It tests for human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. HCG levels begin increasing after a fertilized egg implants into the uterus, about 6-10 days after conception.

Blood tests and ultrasounds can also screen for pregnancies. Urine pregnancy tests are available at The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center at no cost to patients.

Am I a candidate for a pregnancy test?

There are several reasons you might take a pregnancy test at The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center. If you’ve taken a pregnancy test at home but aren’t sure of its accuracy, an in-office test can confirm your result.

You might also need a pregnancy test before using a new form of birth control, taking a new medication, or undergoing other women’s health treatments.

What happens during a pregnancy test?

Urine tests are common pregnancy tests. To complete this test, you will simply pee in a cup, and the The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center team will evaluate the results to learn if you’re pregnant or not. They may also take a blood sample.

Ultrasounds use painless waves to create images of internal body structures. You might be a candidate for a transvaginal ultrasound (inserting a tiny device into your vagina to create images) or an abdominal ultrasound to view your uterus, confirm a pregnancy, and make sure everything looks healthy.

What can I expect after my pregnancy test?
