The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center conducted its first COVID-19 Tent Testing Center at its Far Rockaway location (1288 Central Avenue, Far Rockaway, NY) on Tuesday, April 14th. Rockaway reached a very important milestone in its fight against the coronavirus. “Even though we are facing ongoing shortages of PPE and testing kits, we feel that it is important to conduct these tests given the high rate of COVID-19 cases in the Far Rockway area,” says Chief Medical Officer, Veronica Wiltshire, MD. “So many people were so grateful to be tested – they need to know their status so they can protect themselves, their families and community. We are so pleased to be able to offer this service.”
Because of the wide need and high demand for the tent testing, Addabbo added an additional hour to the testing event on Thursday. “We are looking to further expand our availability but need to issue a call to action for more PPE donations to help ensure we can staff our testing,” said Miriam Y. Vega, PhD, Addabbo’s CEO. Besides being the CEO of a community health center, Vega is also a psychologist who originally began her career in the HIV/AIDS field. “What I came to know as a truth in HIV was that testing matters,” she explained. “Knowing one’s status is empowering and the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center is committed to testing the community and being a partner to the City at this critical point in time. Our community deserves that resource.”
The community has thus far been incredibly responsive to the needs for PPE at Addabbo. Donations of PPE consisting of masks, gowns, gloves, hand sanitizers, etc. have been gratefully received by staff members.
Please call the health center at 718-945-7150 to make an appointment for a test.
